    Holiday Cards

Due to their overwhelming popularity.... Holiday Greeting Cards will again be offered this year by the USAFA AZ PARENTS CLUB. This is our major fundraiser for the year. Proceeds go to funding the exciting All Academies Military Ball, which we will host for the year 2004, sending out "boodle" to our cadets and funding our activities. Of course a portion of each package sold goes to the Rando Fund (which helps Cadets travel home under last minute hardships and bereavement conditions).

Watch for our new, unique 2003 card, along with some of our popular designs from the past few years. Cards will be available in October.

Watch for more information on our website www.usafaparents-arizona.org in September. Don't be left out....ORDER EARLY!

    1) Support all AZ appointees to the AF Academy or Prep School with the Doolie Send-Off Dinner and Adopt-A-Doolie Program.

    2) Support the AZ families who have a Cadet at the Academy or Prep School. We provide valuable support and information during the Parent Weekend Send-Off Breakfast and Doolie Dinner.

    3) Send boxes of goodies twice a year to the Cadets to encourage them during final exams.

    4) Participate in the annual Holiday All Academies Ball, send gifts to the graduating seniors, host the Parent Weekend Dinner Buffet, and other activities.

    5) We are a link for information from USAFA. The Club President receives information and news from the Academy which is forwarded to our members.

     A Big Hit With Cadets!

Cadets received care packages of cookies and other yummy treats the week of exams thanks to the AZ Parents Club. We met at the home of Barbara & Steve Hadley in Fountain Hills and successfully packed 60 boxes to be shipped to our cadets. A pot-luck lunch was served afterwards followed by a brief meeting led by President Ruth Klenk-Janzik. Thank you to the parents who came as well as those who could not attend but sent donations.

    Fall Picnic

We are also looking for some volunteers to help coordinate this effort. Let's take advantage of some cooler weather in late October and get to know each other a little better. This will be a great kickoff to stir excitement for the All Academies Holiday Ball held in December.

    2003 Doolie Day Out

Sunday, July 13, 2003 is Doolie Day Out. This will be the first opportunity for you to talk with your Cadet after in-processes. Leave the whole day open for "the call."

This is the half-way mark of Basic Cadet Training. They are picked up for the day by their Sponsor family and can finally relax. They will be tired, but excited, and perhaps a little homesick. The Sponsor family will try to feed them a favorite dish. Usually, the Cadets prefer to chill and call their parents and friends.

It is a good idea to have sent a phone card for the Doolies to use, as these calls add up. Also, it's fun to send a one-time use camera with a self-addressed stamped envelope which the sponsor family can return so that all may enjoy this special day.

Important Things to be Aware of...

    FamNet- Family Underground Network (FUN)

There is a list serve organization set up for support, information, announcements, events, issues, and news to be shared on the internet with all USAFA families across the United States. It is called FamNet and is managed by Bob & doni Hardy in Albuquerque, NM. They volunteer their time so that families of Cadets can stay informed.

The Email address is: famnet@falconpride.com and the cost is $20 a year.

doni has also set up a new list serve for incoming Appointees. Appointees may register on the Appointee Net and begin receiving valuable information. The email address for this is: arhardy@thuntek.net  There is also a listserv for graduates and associate members called GradNet.  The email address for this is: grads@falconpride.com

    AZ Parents Club Website

Please visit our club web site at: http://www.usafaparents-arizona.org which was established to be another valuable medium for communicating with members, posting current events and hosting important fund raisers. It is upgraded and changed regularly by our volunteer webmasters John & Candi Prangley. Photos of your cadets, family or club activities are always welcome!

    Email

One of our most important ways to relay information about events is through email. Despite our best efforts to keep our list updated, as you know email addresses change frequently. You can help us out by dropping our secretary a note with your updated email address at: Conni@sossolutions.org

    FamNet Dinner

Plan to attend the FamNet dinner at Parents Weekend on Thursday August 28th beginning at 5:30pm at Arnold Hall. Information is available at: http://www.falconpride.com/FamilyNetDinner.html Cost is $11 per person. There will be 5 quilts raffled at the dinner to raise money for the Dennis P. Rando Fund. One of the quilts has a "Bring Me Men" theme. Let us know if you plan to attend and we'll let you know the other AZ parents who will also be there.

    Tips for Parents Weekend....

This is your Cadet's 1st weekend away from the academy, so don't over-plan the visit. They are stressed and exhausted and may just want to chill in your hotel room. They enjoy dining out, movies, shopping and playing video games in the room. Remember, 4th Class Cadets must wear their uniforms at all times when outside their motel room, including traveling outside the Colorado Springs area (which must be within 150 mile radius), so don't be surprised if they prefer to stay in the room most of the time in clothes from home that you've brought for the weekend. Do bring some comforts from home like their pillow or a favorite DVD or VCR tape to watch. Be flexible and play it by ear. Allow plenty of time to catch up on sleep!

Your Cadet will have a list of needed items. Topping that list is usually computer printers, ironing boards, vacuum cleaners, sleeping bags, personal items & cleaning supplies. 4th Class Cadets know what they may not have, so don't bring anything up until you check with them. Cell phones are not allowed until after Recognition in March.

Don't be too surprised if they do not want to give you the Jack's Valley Tour. Don't worry because another year they may be more receptive to these tours.

Don't be surprised if they become very quiet when it's time to return to the Academy on Monday, September 1st. They must sign in by 7:30pm. There will be a lot of traffic so plan ahead. They must be on time for sign in!

    Parents Weekend 2003

    ********************************

What To Expect On Parents Weekend:

Take frequent rest stops and please drink plenty of water. You are at higher altitude and dehydration comes quickly. Headache is an early sign!

Plan ahead of time where to meet your cadet for all events & be specific! This is very important. There are 4000 cadets who look alike in uniform.

Upon the Cadet's return they will often hear holiday music playing on loudspeakers, courtesy of the upperclassmen and cadres. This is a tactic to make the cadets realize they are once again back to reality, as they must know it, for the duration of their Academy life. Parents may escort their cadets directly to their dorm rooms. The squadron may even give a little send-off party for you, for which you have been asked to make a monetary contribution. Enjoy!!

    FOOTBALL Game
    USAFA vs. Wofford College

Saturday, August 30th USAFA will kick off their football season against Wofford College (Coach DeBerry's alma mater). Kick off is tentatively scheduled for 1:35pm, but we will update you via email if this changes. Plan to arrive 2 hours before game time and enjoy some of the tailgate parties. There is a pre-game show and fly-overs and the Cadet Wing marches onto the field approximately an hour before scheduled kick off. Parents who requested to sit with your Cadet will be in Section M18 and the rest of the AZ Parents will be in Section M12.

It's a good idea to let your Cadet know where your seats are. It is easier for them to find you after the game, so specify a meeting place.

After the game, Cadets may leave with their parents for the weekend! You are permitted to go back to the cadet area to pick up your Cadet at this time.

    Gametime Hints:

Comfortable Shoes: are a must! You will be walking everywhere!

Layers of Clothing: Colorado is notorious for rapid changes in weather. It can be warm at the beginning of the game and then windy, cold or rainy by the end! Sun Hats & Sunglasses: are suggested!

Sun Block: At altitude, you will sunburn quickly!

Seat Cushions: Bring your own or rent for $4

Bottled Water (sealed only): bring your own water or buy there.

Food & Drinks: are sold on each level.

Rain Ponchos & Hats: since umbrellas are not allowed in the stadium

Binoculars & Cameras: bring to every event!

    Wear Falcon Blue!

Coolers: are not allowed in the stadium
