Don't Miss Parent's Weekend 2002! Go Falcons!!
This "Open House" type event at the AFA in CO will be over Labor Day Weekend beginning on August 30, 2002 through Sept. 2, 2002. This is a really great time to, first of all, see your Cadet! Then to tour the Academy Campus, partake of all the great meals and the events planned by various organizations, to hear and see and meet the Staff and Educators, and other Cadets, and to even go to class with your Cadet! You will be permitted to enter areas otherwise off limits only on this weekend. It really gives you the "Academy Experience!"

The AZ Parents Club will host a Dinner Buffet at Glen Eagle Golf Clubhouse, which is very close to the Academy, on Friday evening, Aug.30, at 5:30 p.m. This will be a "drop-by" social event to provide an evening meal, rest and chat, for all Arizona Parents and their families. Drinks and dessert included in price. ALL the details of this "Must Do" weekend will be published , in the not so distant future, by our Club, as well as by the AFA itself. BOOK YOUR RESERVATIONS FOR A ROOM ASAP.

A list of Hotels and Motels, with addresses and phone numbers, are printed in the wonderful resourceful "BLUE BOOK." Camp sites are also plentiful in Colorado. You will be so impressed with how your Cadet has matured, and grown up in just a couple of months. And when he or she says.. "See that sign that says 'BRING ME MEN'? I wish it said BRING ME MOM!" You will know you have been missed! After this wonderful weekend, you will also have a better understanding and knowledge, and respect of life for your Cadet who has chosen to serve his/her Country in such a positive way! We owe them our love and support!

FOOTBALL TICKETS....
USAFA vs. NORTHWESTERN
The Parents Club secures a block of 100 tickets yearly for the Parents Weekend Football game. This year they will cost our members, and family, $30.00 each. Forms for these are also enclosed with this Newsletter. We urge you to reserve yours soon, as they do go quickly. The sale of these tickets will be on a first come basis. The rah-rah sis-boom-bah, the fast paced game, the Cadets all marching in their dress Blues, parachute jumping into the stadium, jet fly-bys, and the 6000+ fans all screaming and cheering, and waving pom-poms; will absolutely thrill you!

Of course, we have a form to fill out for this event, enclosed as well. Come join us in cheering the USAFA on to V I C T O R Y! GO FALCONS!

Between Christmas and New Year's Day, there is a gala affair called The All Academies Holiday Ball. The various military Academies take turns hosting this dance/dinner dress up Ball. The 2001 Ball was excellently presented and attended! There is a great deal of coordinating, and party expertise which is required by the Chair and the Co-chair of this elegant and beautiful social function. The Air Force Academy Arizona Parents Club did themselves proud at this one!!! The next All Academies Ball in late December 2002, will be hosted by the Navy Academy AZ Parents Group. Details of this will be in the Fall Newsletter, but we can start looking for our formal wear; and thinking of all the fun and excitement of it in gleeful anticipation!

It's Never Too Early to plan to attend the 2002 All Academies Holiday Ball

March Garage Sale, Pot-Luck, and New Board Elections.....
On March 2, 2002, the AFA AZ Parents Club had another successful three-fold function which consisted of a Garage Sale, Pot-Luck Luncheon, and The New Board Elections. Donn and Sherree Newhouse hosted the event. Our net profit was close to $180.00. These funds will be added to our treasury to fund various events throughout the year for our Cadets and parents. Many thanks to those who contributed items to sell, and for pricing them "to sell," ahead of this event. Also, our thanks for all members who came to help sell, arrange items attractively and neatly, and enforce "wind control"! It all added up to fun, success, and profit for our future club events! All items not sold at the garage sale were donated to The St. Vincent de Paul Society. The Pot-Luck Luncheon began directly after the Garage Sale. Our hard working salespeople enjoyed a variety of side dishes, desserts, drinks and partook of a giant sub sandwich, all contributed by these dedicated parents.

Finally, the yearly elections of the New Board Members were conducted by Tom Hahn, chair of the Nominating Committee. Tom read the bylaws and explained to us the necessity of having "Quorum" met for the voting to proceed. This means that 10 percent of our membership had to be present to make the voting official. We did meet this criteria for quorum, and the new board members were voted in quickly and unanimously.

First Meeting of New Executive Board
The Presidents, Linda and Mark Howes, called and officiated their first Board Meeting on March 14, 2002. The upcoming events and who would coordinate each event were discussed. These included, The May Newsletter, The Cookie Packing Meeting, Graduation, New Appointees Roster, The Doolie Dinner, The Doolie Parents Send-Off Breakfast, Memberships, and Parent's Weekend. The new board agreed membership fees will remain the same this year! We understand the importance of cost effectiveness.

Cookie Packing Time Soon Approaching!
Get out your recipe books, and lay in the supplies, as we are getting ready to bake lots of cookies again! "Nothin' says lovin' like somethin' from the oven," and our cadets love to receive the cookie/goodie boxes to munch on through-out exams! Each family is asked to bring eight dozen cookies or treats, already wrapped 4 to 6 in each zip-locked bag. We always need a lot. The Parents Club supplies the boxes, note paper, labels, and the shipping of this precious cargo! Parents only need to show up with the cookies, a side dish, and an appetite for lunch after our work is done. A Bar-B-Q of Hot Dogs and Hamburgers will be supplied by the host family. Please bring a complimentary side dish, dessert, drink, chips, or something to share! A short meeting follows, so plan to spend a few hours, and have a good time. If for any reason you won't be able to join us, monetary gifts welcomed. Members, Associate Members, Families, New Parents, & AOL's Are Invited!

Information About The USAFA AZ Parents Club...
The next four years will be both exciting and difficult. The Arizona Parents Club was formed to support you and your Cadet throughout the years at the Academy. Please consider joining. Our forms are enclosed. You won't be disappointed. The purpose of our Parent's Club is two-fold:

1) To support all Arizona young people who receive appointments and attend the Academy or Prep School.

2) To support all Arizona families who have a Cadet at the Academy or Prep School. The club sends boxes of goodies twice a year to the Arizona Cadets. This happens approaching finals before Christmas Break and again before Spring Break. The Club participates in the annual Holiday All Academies Ball, sends gifts to graduating seniors, hosts the Doolie Send-off Dinner, and the Parents Send-Off Breakfast. Most importantly, Parents Club members are there to encourage and support cadets and parents when they encounter difficult times. The strength of the club is solely dependent on the strength of its MEMBER-SHIP. THE MORE MEMBERS- THE STRONGER THE CLUB WILL BE!

Important Things to be Aware of...

BLUE BOOKS ARE HERE.....
This 40 page booklet titled: "Cadet Parent Guide" is available for you to purchase on the enclosed form, or at the Doolie Send-Off Dinner. It is called the "Blue Book" for easy reference; however, it is sometimes printed with a gray cover. This is an excellent manual for parents of cadets to have, as it contains tips for parents, details of the Sponsor program for 4th Class cadets, details about cadet pay, squadron names and locations, important telephone numbers, insignia explanation, hotels and motels in the area, and much, much more. The Colorado Parents Club publishes this booklet. Cost $12.00. Payable to USAFA AZ Club.

Name Badges...
Parents Club name badges are available for $12.00 each as well. They are for you to wear proudly at Parents Weekend, and to all Parents Club functions. The badges are in the shape of the State of Arizona, or will be a square with the outline of Arizona on it, depending on production. They are blue background, with white lettering. This is a good I.D. to wear, as on the badge is the first and last name of the parent, the year your cadet will graduate, and "USAFA." You have the option of customizing the badge to say "Father/Mother/ Sister/Aunt/ Grandparent/ Godparent/ Brother/ etc. of Cadet...." Badges may be ordered by completing the form enclosed with this newsletter, or on the night of the Doolie Send-Off Dinner. Badges will be at the Doolie Dinner for those ordering by May 31, 2002. Order with a Membership.

DOOLIE DAY OUT
Sunday, July 14, 2002 is Doolie Day Out this year. This will be the first telephone call home allowed. Leave the whole day open for "the call." Be ready by the phone with a pad and pencil and some Kleenex tissues. You won't mind waiting by the phone on this special day as your Doolie will have much to tell you, or not. This is the half-way mark of Basic Training. They are picked up for the day by their Sponsor family, and can finally let their guard down somewhat. They will be tired, but excited, and perhaps a little home-sick. The Sponsor family will try to feed them a favorite dish, and ask what they want to do. But usually, all they want to do is to veg out for a while, and call parents and friends. It is a good idea to have sent the Sponsor's a phone card for Doolies to use, as these calls add up. Also, some Doolies would like to have a little care package, from home, waiting for them at the Sponsor's. A favorite magazine, some goodies, pictures you took from the T-Cam of the; and a one-time use camera -- with a self addressed stamped envelope to you-- is a courtesy to sponsor's and doolies which they appreciate!

Parents Send-Off Breakfast...
This breakfast meeting gives Doolie parents information on what to expect during BCT, Doolie Day Out, Jack's Valley, as well as suggestions to enhance your visit to the Academy for Parents Weekend, and all the activities and events there. DATES, TIME AND DETAILS LATER...

Adopt A Doolie Parent Program...
The Adopt-A-Doolie parent program presents a fantastic opportunity for the parents of current Cadets to assist and support new Doolie parents through their first year. This assistance would include sharing of Important information, answering questions, and offering support and encouragement. If you are interested in participating in this program please indicate this on the application, or call the PRESIDENTS, MARK AND LINDA HOWES at 480 443- 3263. The feedback from new parents, tells us this is a very important part of their first year, as it serves as a Hot-Line. We have "been-there, done-that."

Family Underground Network (FAMNET)
There is a list serve organization set up for support, information, announcements, events, issues, and news to be shared on the internet with all USAFA families across the United States. It is called Famnet, and is managed by Bob and doni Hardy in Albuquerque, NM. They volunteer their time so that families of Cadets can stay informed. The E -mail address is: famnet@falconpride.com

The cost is $20.00 a year. There are two options of receiving mail on the FamNet: DELUGE or DIGEST. doni has also set up a new list serve for incoming Appointees. Appointees may register on the Appointee Net and begin receiving valuable information. More information on this service can be obtained at: arhardy@thuntek.net

Az Parents Club Web site...

If you have internet access, you may visit our club web site at: http://www.usafaparents-arizona.org We established this site to be another valuable medium for communicating with members, posting current events, and hosting important fundraisers. It is upgraded and changed from time to time. A Webmaster volunteer mans this web site, and we would like to have a list of volunteers who has this knwledge..

THE TERRAZZO CAM
Watch your Cadet on the T-CAM at: http://www.usafa.af.mil/tcam This is a live view of the terrazzo. You might just catch a glimpse of your Cadet.

E-MAIL
Group E-mails, as well as individual E-mails, are another way we communicate important events -- past, present and future -- to our members and to each other. These rosters were updated by the last vice presidents, but soon will need another update. Therefore, we ask you to contact a current Board member with any changes. We will sincerely try to keep everyone informed. There are several other web sites to learn about, and don't forget your Cadets who will have a lap top computer issued to them. Occasionally they can write you! The "Blue Book" has more details and information on Web sites.

The Class of 2006 Doolie Send-Off Dinner......
The Appointee Send Off-Dinner welcomes Arizona Appointees to the Class of 2006! All Appointees and their parents should plan to attend this event. Family members are also cordially invited. This dinner pro-vides a great opportunity for current AZ Parents Club members to meet and greet, answer questions, and encourage the new Appointees. We welcome any Cadets that are home on leave, and urge them to attend this dinner, in uniform, as their presence, and willingness to answer questions, will be an encouragement to those preparing to enter the Academy on June 27, 2002. We all vividly remember what this time of year is like for these new USAFA Appointees and their families. They would especially like to see Cadets, and be able to talk with them. Reservations are required to attend this event. PLEASE SEND IN YOUR RESERVATIONS ASAP. The deadline to receive your reservations and payment is May 31, 2002. Appointees and Cadets in uniform are FREE! The new Executive Board Members have been able to keep the price the same as last year! Forms for this occasion are included with this Newsletter.
