ARIZONA PARENTS CLUB NEWSLETTER

October 2001

Prologue

Just after we visited our cadets at USAFA for Parent Weekend we were shocked by the attack on our nation. We have watched in horror the terrible destruction and loss of lives that occurred on September 11, 2001. Today we stand together in grief for those who lost family, friends and colleagues in this senseless act of violence. We are ever grateful for the well being of our own families and cadets, and we embrace and offer our help, sympathy and prayers as we mourn the loss of so many.

Janice Cook, parent of 2nd. Lt. Tim Cook (USAFA Class 2001), has sent us a heartwarming account of her niece's efforts to aid those afflicted at this time of need:

"My 11-year old niece, Miss Kelsey Ryan Bradley of Golden, Colorado, was so moved by the recent events in New York City, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania, that she set out to help the victims of the terrorist attacks.  Too young to give blood, she decided to organize a fundraiser because a Denver television station, WB2, had promised to match any donations collected on behalf of victims. On Saturday, September15, Kelsey and her friends, Paige Taylor and Kelly Farmer, set up a card table at the Rolling Hills    Country Club and solicited donations while Kelsey's Daddy, David   Bradley, played golf.  On the table was an American flag and big tea jar with a sign reading, "Even a nickel will help."  Feeling sorry for the girls, but proud of their efforts, David promised to match whatever the girls collected.  At the end of the day, David had to write a check to the WB2 fund in the amount of $1,080.47...as did Mr. Taylor...as did Mrs. Taylor.  Kelly's father sent $5,000 from Texas.  The girls will be on live television tomorrow morning to present $9,321.88 to the television station."

The AZ USAFA Parent Club will continue to plan for all the activities currently on our calendar, naturally mindful of the uncertainty of future events in our country. We thank you for your support in our efforts to continue with our projects.

Parent Club News

Recent events:

Our Parent Send-Off Breakfast was held on Saturday, August 11 at the Country Harvest Buffet in Tempe. It was well attended by parents of Class 2005 cadets, as well as upperclassmen parents and Board members, who offered advice and informational packets pertaining to Parent Weekend.

The Parent Weekend Buffet Supper on Friday, August 31 was a great success. Seventy-one guests met at the Glen Eagle Clubhouse in Colorado Springs for a wonderful pasta buffet. It gave everyone the opportunity to meet and converse in a relaxed atmosphere after a long and rainy day in COS. Thanks to all who attended this activity. It has become a tradition for our Club and will be held again next year.
